Bullying has always occurred in schools in the form of teasing, verbal abuse and physical threats but in the modern computer age a new more insidious form of bullying has emerged. Cyber-bullying is the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass or target another person. Students who commit cyber-bullying should be suspended from school unless the bullying is so severe the police need to be involved.
All students have a right to feel safe and secure at school and elsewhere. Students who bully must be made to see the consequences of their actions and suspending cyber-bullies will act as a deterrent to others who may otherwise have taken up the practice.

The basic role of schools is to educate students and effective education can only take place when students feel they are in a safe, secure environment. A student who is being bullied in any form will not feel this security.
Cyber-bullying is more insidious because the bullying can also take place after school through social media networks like Facebook or through other forms of technology such as texting or e-mailing. A year-old girl who has been bullied all day at school will feel even more isolated when the bullying continues through their phone or home computer.
Suspending a cyber-bully will send a clear message to the bully that their actions are unacceptable and force them to think about what they have done. For the bully, cyber-bullying has the added advantage of being at least partially anonymous.
Andrew Guigliamo was 15 when he was suspended from his American school for cyber-bullying a younger boy. When he was caught he was suspended from his prestigious school and offered counseling which helped him see the consequences of his actions and eventually he apologized to the younger student.
Clearly being suspended for cyber-bullying was the right course of action in this case. Bullying thrives when the bully feels that he or she is impressing others with their actions.

A crowd which gathers around a fight and encourages the bully to hurt their victim is only encouraging that bully to continue their actions. This is equally true for cyber-bullying. A sixteen year old girl who sets up a Facebook page to denigrate other girl will feel a genuine sense of power when other students make comments on their page against her victim.
Students who commit cyber-bullying must be suspended from school when they are caught. Only then will all students feel they are in a secure environment, the bully will have a chance to learn from their misdeeds and a clear message will be sent to other students at the school that cyber-bullying will not be tolerated.
Modern computer technology can be a wonderful asset when used appropriately but as a society we must never tolerate those who use this technology for inappropriate purposes such as cyber-bullying.
